The Dish & the Runaway Spoon Edmonton - Tasty sandwiches and divine desserts

Rating: 7.5/10

Starting off a few years ago in a tiny spot, The Dish & Runaway Spoon has grown into a quintessential part of Edmonton's food scene.  Great place to grab a nice sandwich, coffee or chai latte and dessert with the girlfriends. Locally sourcing ingredients and some organic menu items is a nice bonus. They recently added in a "movies" night to facilitate dining for singles in the new addition added on after the odd fireplace store next to it went out of business. The hidden little garden in the back is wonderful in the summer and secluded enough to count as a lush green get away in downtown. Service is always prompt and courteous.

Now, the FOOD:
Definitely more of a lunch/coffee/dessert place as their lunch and dessert items stand out more so than their dinner entrees which are reminiscent of Highlevel Diner fare. That said, my fav is the curried turkey burger (made with real roasted turkey seasoned and smushed into a burger shape) with mango chutney is consistently moist and flavorful, though be warned you do need plenty of napkins as it tends to fall apart as you eat it. Any of their flatbread pizzas are a nice shared appetizer or doubles as a light lunch/snack. Salads are hit and miss - highly dependant upon what is seasonal. Finish off with a sticky english toffee pudding cake (formally known as the piece de resistance) and you have a perfectly simple and satisfying meal and a sinfully delightful dessert.

DESSERTS: Although all of thier desserts are made in house and good.. I always turn to the sticky english toffee pudding cake which they bake fresh to order (so you need to wait 10-15min.. good things take time people!). Its plated beautifully though I still prefer it served in the past: still in its ceramic bowl as it keeps the cake nice and warm as you eat it, with all the toppings soaking into the sucker. Its moist, not overly sweet and swimming in vanilla icecream, whipped cream and a rich caramel sauce. It can be shared, but oh, I'm soooo not sharing.

The VERDICT
Quibble - occasionally will find salads have dirt due to inadequate washing.. a little bit too organic for me, and table placements close to archway to second dining area is very snug, even for waiflike customers to squeeze into without bumping into other patrons, 7.5/10.
Go, sip, sup and food coma!
