Vancouver family dinner... there's nothing like home cooking, especially when my Aunt cooks!

There's nothing like home cooking, and this post goes out to Auntie for the ridiculously awesome and tasty meals she made for us.. all from scratch!  There are times I wish I could eat like this everday...
We start off with a tasty fresh fish steamed to perfection and swimming in sweetened soy sauce, green onions and ginger!

Culina at the Muttart, Edmonton AB - brunch and basking in the sun

Rating Service 7.5/10 Food 8.5/10
On a sunny weekend, we headed out to a much anticipated brunch with friends at the base of the Muttart Conservatory pyramids. We opted for the outdoor patio tables seeing it was a super sunshiney day. Modern water fountains peek out from the concrete walls interspersed with greenery and flowers - its the Muttart, you expect flowers and foliage everywhere.. which made the austere and clean lines of Culina's patio (the entrance of the Muttart) a bit surprising.

Only a small view of the interior of the Muttart is available from the patio, and a little bit more in the indoor seating when the weather isn't as cooperative, but you can easily stroll around to see everything after your meal. No need for admission to enter the restaurant! With a lively breeze mischievously tugging at our menus and napkins, we settle in for a tasty brunch.

Old Szechuan, Edmonton AB - fire breathing spicy goodness

Rating Service 7.5/10, Food 8.5/10
It started with a craving... then when a fellow foodie had a craving for flavorful and spicy food, I had the perfect excuse to call up other like minded foodies and hit up Old Szechuan in downtown Edmonton.  I loooove spicy food, with a caveat that the food is as super flavorful as its spicy... and not just one big plate of lava.  Looking like a converted ramshackle house with a dirt/gravel parking lot, this little unpolished gem is one of the best places in Edmonton to have traditional Szechuan fare. Translation - food with lots of flavors and packing plenty of heat to boot... some dishes comprise of 50% chili peppers. For those that are faint of heart, or prefer to have your tongue unperforated at the end of the meal - fear not, as all dishes can be made from a spicy level of zero to a check sanity level 7. Just be sure to let the waitresses know or you'll be having your meal prepared at the heat level its traditionally offered at. Red table cloths and an abundance of red decor gives the interior and its occupants a ruddy glow. With a small aquarium of live crabs and fish in the front, and tantalizing smells drifting out from the kitchen, we're quickly seated and scanning the very extensive menu.

Charcut, Calgary AB - Just as yummy revisited

Rating Service 9/10, Food 9.5/10
On a recent visit to Calgary, we couldn't pass up stopping by Charcut again. Though we had reviewed Charcut a little while back, they had changed up their menu, so we made reservations and stopped on by for dinner. This time, we circled around to the back of restuarant before going in, to have a look at the infamous "backdoor" where you can stop by for an "alley burger" - if you keep an eye on their twitter feed or facebook, they sell a $5 late night charcut share burger renamed alley burger every now and then, well, because you have to wait in line in the alley. Sadly, the little wood piggy sign they usually swing out to indicate "alley burgers for sale now" was missing... that little piggy a good 3 meters off the ground - I guess went to market and definetely didn't stay home. Service was excellent - our waiter was enthusiastic, even going to the back to check if they still had some of the menu items we had last time prepped in the kitchen.
