Twisted Yogurt Creations, Edmonton AB - bland soft serve but lotsa toppings!
Rating 6/10
After a hot bowl of ramen and sushi rolls at Nomiya, we popped over to Twisted Yogurt Creations right next door for dessert. The color scheme is as simplistic as the idea behind this self serve frogurt-ary.
1) Grab a container, plop in as much or little frozen yogurt you want from the soft serve machines. Going back and forth between different flavors and machines is okay - just let your inner kid out.
2) Top with all sorts of candy, nuts, fresh fruit, chocolate etc toppings as you want
3) Weigh it and pay for it
4) Eat your creation!

Nomiya, Edmonton AB - satisfying bowl of salty savory ramen

Rating: Service 7.5/10, Food 6.5/10
After what felt like weeks of cold, gloomy and wet downpour, we called up a few friends and dropped by Nomiya for some ramen. The darkwood tables and minimalistic decor has a zen like feel to it, though it was marred by the air conditioner that was set on Arctic blast... so everyone had to keep their coats on throughout the meal. Service was polite, unobtrusive, with snippets of Japanese occasionally floating between the staff and kitchen, and a salty seafood tang in the air, Nomiya looked promising.
Nomiya boasts a large and varied menu, with sashimi/sushi rolls (which they strangely categorize as tapas), grilled skewers and seafood, and of course a ramen selection. With the a/c on full blast, it wasn't surprising all of us opted for a bowl of ramen and rounded things out with a few rolls to share.

The Bauernschmaus Restaurant, Edmonton AB - Feel like a stuffed bratwurst afterwards... Ja!

My fellow foodie had a hankering for a mess of decent sausages, and where better to look for good sausages and beer than a German restaurant named for "Farmer's Feast"? We popped our heads into this cozy quaint restaurant awash in warm tones of brick, amber woods with plenty of rustic touches - wooden carvings of sheaths of wheat, a baker's paddle with bread and light fixtures made out of miniature plows... we debated if they were miniatures, or antique ones for mules or smaller plow animals.
Service was friendly and informative - the staff seem more comfortable speaking in German, which alas, my mangling of the menu items sounded more like I was gargling with rocks, with my head underwater. A family friendly place, little kids from a neighbouring table were happily exploring the place and petting the handcrafted carved and painted flowers on the back of every chair.

Cô Dô Huê (Co Do Hue) Edmonton - Tasty traditional Vietnamese fare even if you can't pronounce the name right

After circling around for a bit, finally found this little gem tucked behind Safeway/Sobeys - can't remember, it was a grocery store. A sister location to Trang Tien, a family owned Vietnamese restuarant in the same parking lot as Mirama. This new location has nicer decor and is cozier than the original pseudo cafeteria style digs. Almost as an answer to my grumblings that the north side of Edmonton has a dearth of restuarants, Cô Dô Huê is a welcome and super busy addition to the food scene. Priding themselves in making traditional Vietnamese cuisine, its one of the few places in the city where you can go to taste the tender -chewy savoury tapioca based dumplings bursting with savory sweet saltiness of shrimp and pork, or their incredibly tasty clams tossed in an infernally spicy but addictively good sauce over top of rice vermicelli, or really really good lemon grass chicken cooked over charcoal. Mmmm.

Vero's Bistro Moderne Calgary - best $15 2 course gourmet lunch... yup, thats two courses for $15!

With fond memories of a decadently done duck breast (seasoned asian bbq duck style but cooked to a tender medium rare) we had at Vero's last year, we were sorely disappointed it was no longer circulating on their menu when we dropped by for lunch. It was an excellently executed dish, and it was either removed because to stay competitive, most restaurants in Calgary update their menus at a dizzying rate, or it fell off the menu due to the economic times.
With a nod to said economic times and to encourage patrons to drop by for lunch, Vero's is running a lunch promo. Alongside some of the regular dishes you can order, a set menu lunch where you choose 2 courses off a limited menu is available for $15. Yup. $15 for an appetizer and entree, and if you have room, you can round it out with a dessert for another $5. So essentially, a 3 course meal for $20! I don't think many restaurants of Vero's calibre can boast a deal like this - I'm not too sure where they're making money on this either... but I digress, lets talk about the foooood!
