I was craving ramen. A good honest to gawd rich tontkosu broth slowly simmer with lots of pork bones and bouncy mouthfeel fresh ramen noodles swimming in the rich broth. And there isn't a lot of ramen places open on weekends in Calgary. Luckily for me, my cousin and his girlfriend had heard of Shiki Menya, a new ramen joint that uses locally sourced ingredients (not sure where they got locally sourced bamboo shoots)... AND only served 150 bowls of ramen a day. Once they run out, that's it, see you tomorrow. Intrigued, we headed out early to Bridgeland and 20 minutes before they were set to open... they already had a line up 40+ people deep...Monday, 16 June 2014

Tony's Pizza Palace Edmonton, AB - tossing and serving fine extra thin crust pizzas since 1974!
Some of my friends have been going and raving about Tony's Pizza Palace for years, and we finally got a chance to be in the area around dinner a little while ago, and yes, the taste of tradition is still alive and kicking at Tony's Pizza Palace! There's pizza dough spinning expertly up into the air, with the scent of garlic and cheese redolent in the air as you step into this pizzeria... its like taking a step back into the past when pizza was being born in Edmonton... they've been perfecting their pizzas since they opened in 1964? 1965? but... onto the food!

Best customized Belgium waffle recipes... eggnog, lemon ricotta, carrot cake, fruit and more Part 3 of Breakfast and brunch series!

Its onwards and upwards with the Breakfast and Brunch series.. in this part 3, we're going to cover how to make the best customized waffles.. specifically Belgium waffles that are nice and fluffy on the inside but have a nice crisp exterior. While this isn't a yeast based recipe that needs to sit overnight, this version you can whip up easily in the morning when you have a craving for waffles... or want to spoil your family or that special someone. As for toppings and add-in's and flavor twists, from syrups to fruit to savory and sweet.. I've included a huge list of add-ons to the basic buttermilk waffle recipe so you can make churro'ed waffles, pumpkin pie waffles, chocolate waffles, coconut waffles...

El Meson Sandwiches San Jaun, Puerto Rico - Amazing sandwiches at Peurto Rico's first chain alternative to fast food restaurants!
Starting off as a humble family run deli offering hot sandwiches in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico back in 1972, this Caribbean style sandwich joint expanded and grew over the years into a tasty franchise that will likely enter the main US market soon (and not soon enough!)... for a chain restaurant, we soon found out why Puerto Rican's were so proud of El Meson serving up delicious sandwiches... because the sandwiches are freaking delicious!!
